Since January 2009, Helmut Leopold is with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, where he holds the position Head of Safety and Security Department. In this role he is responsible for the definition and implementation of the new research program for the Department and implementing the change program.
From 1999 until 2008 Helmut Leopold worked with Telekom Austria, where he held the position of Managing Director Platform and Technology Management and was responsible for IT, Network as well as Product Management Wholesale. During his assignment with Telekom Austria Helmut Leopold played a leading role in the innovation process of the company and was the driving force behind Telekom Austria´s IPTV program as well as the NGN transformation program for IT and network (all optical, xDSL, IPv6, etc.) of Telekom Austria.
Between 1994 and 1999 he was Head of Department Broadband Technology at Alcatel Austria, where he was responsible for the Austrian CATV market. From 1989 to 1994 he served as a research engineer at Alcatel ELIN Research Center, in the fields of high performance networking and multimedia communications.
As chairman of the “Broadband Services Forum (BSF)”, an international task force of network operators, content owners and manufacturers, Helmut Leopold plays a pivotal role as a driving force in the new media and broadband communication industry. International awards like “Euro50, Leaders in Broadband and Pay-TV” of the trade magazine Cable&Satellite Europe (London 2006 and 2007) as well as national awards like the State Prices for Innovation, Multimedia and e-Business for both the “IPTV Project St. Anna” (Vienna 2006) and the “User Generated Content Project Colorful TV Engerwitzdorf” (Vienna, 2005), underline his successful commitment in the area of new media.
Helmut Leopold is President of the Austrian Organisation for Information and Communication Technology (GIT) and Member of the Board of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association (OVE). Helmut Leopold has always been actively involved in European research projects and international standardization. He acts as evaluator for the R&D programs of the European Commission and was also Vice President of the Austrian Research Center Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien (FTW). Helmut Leopold hold lecturers at the Vienna University of Technology, the University of Vienna as well as the MCI Management Center Innsbruck on Broadband Communication and Innovation Management. Moreover, he has served on the Boards of several companies providing strategic, technology and business leadership.
Helmut Leopold has a degree in Electronics and Communications from the Technical College HTBLV Rankweil, Austria and a degree in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology.
Helmut Leopold is highly regarded as a visionary speaker on media and telecommunications issues at international level.
Helmut Leopold lives in Vienna, Austria, with his wife and four children and likes to spend his leisure time with the family in theaters, climbing, mountain biking and skiing.
